The Gospel of John #20

By Robert Guenther

We are continuing our review of the Gospel of John chapter five and the 3rd sign, which is the healing of the impotent man at pool named Bethesda.

Vs. Joh 5:20 “For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.” We know that the Jews required signs in order to believe the truth and we read that the Father and Son are performing the same works to prove they are equal. This healing and the ability to raise the dead as we read in our next verse are examples of the Father and Son being one and equal in the miracles performed.

Vs. Joh 5:21 “For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.” The ability to raise the dead is a power that comes directly from God. The fact that the Christ can perform the same task should convince us that He and God are one.

Vs. Joh 5:22 “For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:” I believe this power is reserved in the Son because of the work that He performed with His death, burial and resurrection. It is stated in our next verse that the Son should receive honour because of this finished work.

Vs. Joh 5:23 “That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.” This total and complete equality is the truth that we must believe to have life in His name. Mankind however does not want to give the Son this honour that He has earned and thus reject the only way provided for men where they must be saved. Ac 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

Vs. Joh 5:24 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” God has given us His word to believe and the act of hearing and believing is all that is required of all mankind to receive this life. Ro 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Vs. Joh 5:25 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. Some will not hear His words. Some will reject His truth and will not have ears to hear. Ac 17:32 “And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, we will hear thee again of this matter.
